Fuel system

The twin engine Delorean has a heavy guage 304 stainless steel fuel tank, snugly mounted in the center of the frame. Externally, the tank is surrounded and cushioned on all sides by foam rubber frame inserts. Internally, the fuel tank uses the standard Honda fuel sender, low fuel sensor, fuel pump, and venting. Open cell foam is installed to damp sloshing. The tank has been pressure tested, submersion tested, and inversion tested. It does not leak, either under pressure, or under vacuum. A system of check and flap valves limit the flow of fuel in the event the car is flipped over.

In a stock Delorean, the fuel filler tube is in the front, under the hood. Because the twin engine Delorean has an engine there, it was necessary to relocate the fuel filler door. I felt vaguely guilty cutting a hole in a perfectly good left quarterpanel, but oh well.

Here is the hole, partially cut.

The car got its revenge for the affront shortly after. Here's a selfportrait after smacking the edge of the door with my head. Door: 1, Head: 0.

Here is a close-up of the fuel filler door. It's very functional, but the color and texture of polished aluminum on brushed 304 stainless is offensive to me. I'm thinking of painting it black, or laminating it with 304 stainless.
